Position: Senior/Executive Pastor

Job Classification: Full-time/Salaried (Appointed)

Location: CUMC has had a rich and historic presence in the community of Covington, Indiana since 1840. Covington is located on the banks of the Wabash River in west central Indiana.

Job Description: We are a congregation looking to grow in discipleship and fulfill our mission of being "Centered in Christ, Encouraging Others and Welcoming All". To that end, we are looking for a Pastor who can oversee/partner with staff, committees, and lay leaders in establishing the vision for ministry. The Pastor will preach, teach, administer the Sacraments and give primary leadership in the ministries of Worship, Administration, Stewardship and Outreach. This position will serve under the supervision of the Staff/Parish Relations Committee and the District Superintendent of the West District, Indiana United Methodist Conference.

Regular Duties:

Develop a preaching and worship plan for Sunday services, Easter and Christmas, including guest speakers when necessary;

Oversee the ministries and missions of CUMC, including outreach to the unchurched, inactive members and new residents;

Conduct baptism; Holy Communion in worship and in homes; perform weddings and funerals;

General oversight of staff through: developing and maintaining job descriptions in consultation with staff members; periodic performance reviews of paid staff; recommend changes, reallocation, dismissal or additions to staff through the Staff/Parish Relations Committee; provide resources and support for staff care and morale; periodic development of salary recommendations for all staff thru Staff/Parish Relations Committee;

Visit members in the nursing home/hospital or at the member's home and maintain a log of such visits;

Maintain regular office hours and provide the church secretary with a working calendar of activities outside of the church during regular working hours;

Contact all worship guests, including a home visit if requested;

Actively engage in community events/activities by attending school functions, athletic events and other civic activities that ensures a presence in the community;

Conduct confirmation classes annually;

Greet members/guests at the conclusion of services at the back of the sanctuary;

Work with the Director of Music to develop and maintain a music program for all ages and to integrate music into worship and other areas of the congregation;

Principal responsibility for financial development and stewardship, working with the responsible committees to address the General Operating Budget, capital campaigns, special gifts etc;

Communicate with congregation thru the church newsletter or website regularly regarding the activities of the church and Pastor;

Work with the Trustees to see the the facilities of the church and parsonage are functional and in good repair;

Serve as the staff representative on all committees;

Work with Worship committee in the creation and promotion of small group/Bible studies, adult and children Sunday School;

Champion the development of systems and infrastructure (10 year plan) by all ministry and support areas that envisions healthy, long-term growth of the church;

Follow the tenants of the United Methodist Book of Discipline. Prepare and submit all required reports to the Conference timely;

Skills, Experience and Educational Background; This position requires a strong spiritual background. A divinity or biblical studies degree would be a positive attribute but is not a requirement. The applicant must have a good track record of effective leadership, judgment and above reproach character. Other skills required:

Ability to supervise pastoral staff and understand, motivate and support ministry leaders;

Good written and verbal communications skills,

Proficient technology skills

Confidential, helpful, cheerful, diplomatic and caring positive attitude to ALL;

Attention to detail, able to prioritize and multi-task;

Stable home life visible to others;

A shepherd's temperament; servant-leader/mentor attitude and inclination;

Strong interpersonal skills- ability to communicate persuasively and compassionately both orally and in writing;

Strong biblical foundation for wise management in a church setting; strong prayer life

Attend church activities and events- become attuned to the needs of the congregation and display and interest in the lives of the members/families;

Ability to recognize long held beliefs and traditions while maintaining relevance in the ever changing world;

Ability to discern member's unique talents and gifts to guide and better prepare them for leadership positions and discipleship;

Good conflict resolutions skills;

Must love God, people and is looking for a long term appointment.

Compensation: Commensurate with educational background, experience and skills. Compensation package does include the use of the church parsonage.
